News Feb 08
I have placed some images of my recent work in the photo gallery. It has been very well received at the shows in the latter part of 2007. I have been using a very translucent porcelain which allows decoration on the inside of the piece to show through on the outside. The translucency has led me to have more defined areas of decoration leaving other areas plain. This creates a good contrast between the two and shows the translucency best. It is, perhaps, more simple and calm than before but has evolved out of my earlier work. As you will know, I am always trying new techniques so that my work is always progressing and developing. However, the themes wjich influence my work can still be seen.
The list of shows planned for 2008 is already filling up with more to be added as the year goes on. I am very pleased to have been asked to be on the judging panel of the Zelli Porcelain Award which takes place on 6th March at the renowned Zelli store in London. The other two judges are Paul Atterbury (who is known as an expert and author on Ceramics and also his appearances on BBC’s Antiques Roadshow) and Sister Wendy Beckett, the well respected Art Historian (also known for her many TV appearances). I am very pleased to be asked to join them!
I returned to France for 2 shows in 2007, The first show was a return to the bi-annual Argilla event in Aubagne. Aubagne is just outside Marseilles and, obviously, the weather helps to make it a fantastic outdoor event. The centre of town is closed to traffic for 2 days and the streets are lined with stalls selling all kinds of ceramics. 65,000 people visit over the 2 days and the atmosphere is wonderfully colourful. It has a fantastic atmosphere with long, sunny days and lots of music and street theatre, but, most importantly, crowds of people who are enthusiastic about ceramics. If you are in the South of France on holiday in 2009, try and get along.
Arts du Feu in Rennes last December was another beautiful place to have a potters market. A smaller event but again, a high quality of work. Weather,by contrast, extremely cold for an outdoor event but it was almost Christmas!
Some of the “Summer” shows here in the UK suffered from the British climate last year. Art in Action in particular, was very wet. The British spirit helped to make it a really good show despite the rain. Lets hope for a better summer for the outdoor events this year. They are all so well organised that it is a pity that the weather can make such a difference.
I was pleased to be selected for the Origin show last year. This event grew out of what used to be the Chelsea Craft Show when it outgrew it’s venue and moved to Somerset House. It was a very successful show.
As usual, if you would like to be kept informed about any shows, please get in touch or let me have your postal address if you would like to be on our mailing list.
Have a good 2008
